Every child has swimming abilities – there’s a little Michael Phelps or Simone Manuel in each of them.  Help yours find their swimming potential through the  Eastside Family Y Swim Team!  Swimmers of all ages and abilities participate in our Swim Teams.  Led by caring coaches, we emphasize personal improvement through stroke technique and training, a strong work ethic and team work through competitive swimming.   Swimmers compete locally with the opportunity to advance to the district, state and national level.

Program Offerings

Our team is open to swimmers age 6 (as of December 1, 2019) through 18, and of any level or ability, provided they can pass a swim safety test (more details under “New Swimmers” below). Our 2019 – 2020 season starts on September 16 at Harborcreek High school, with practices being held Monday through Thursday. For the first two weeks, the swimmers will be divided by age. After the first two weeks of practice, swimmers will be placed into groups based on ability, with younger, less advanced swimmers practicing from 6 – 7:15pm, and older, more advanced swimmers practicing from 6:45 – 8:30pm. The minimum practice attendance is two practices per week, though older and more dedicated swimmers should plan to attend as many practices as possible. Meets will begin in late October, with four dual meets needed to attend championship and post-season meets. (See schedule below for more details.)

Though our season starts in mid-September, we understand that many swimmers also participate in Fall sports. We will not begin taking attendance for meets until October, and registration is open until November for both new and returning swimmers.
For additional information, check out our forms and FAQs at the bottom of this page, email Coach Alyssa at [email protected], stop by the front desk, or check our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com.eastsideymcaswimteam/ .

At the YMCA, the safety of children is our top priority. All volunteers must have current Act 33 and 34 clearances, as well as a complete volunteer application, which includes a Code of Conduct. As all Swim Team families must take a turn volunteering for timekeeping at swim meets, we require that at least one person per family become a certified volunteer for this purpose. Parents who have current Act 33 and Act 34 clearances may provide copies for their files; if the parent has no current clearances, the YMCA will obtain them at no cost to the applicant. An application form is included below (under Forms and Information), as well as a link to an electronic application. We thank you for joining us in keeping our kids as safe as possible!

For both new and returning swimmers, registration is open until November.

Welcome to our team! New swimmers will need to take a swim safety test before registering with our team. These tests can be scheduled with Coach Alyssa (at [email protected]). After their swim test, swimmers will be able to register for swim team at the front desk of the Eastside YMCA. Registration is $200 for the first swimmer in a family, $180 for each additional swimmer. (These fees cover pool time, coach salaries, dual meets, and one swim cap. Some additional, mostly optional expense would be for a swim suit, invitational meets, etc.) Swimmers must also be or become a member of the YMCA, per YUSA mandate.

Please fill out the relevant forms listed below. Forms can be turned in at the YMCA front desk, emailed to Coach Alyssa (at [email protected]) or brought to the first day of practice. Swimmers can pay registration fees online here: https://www.ymcaerie.org/programs/341/ymca-swim-team/ ) or register by phone or in person at the front desk. (Families with multiple or high school swimmers will need to utilize this option to obtain their discounts.)

Alyssa Nutile, Head Coach

Hello, everyone! This is my first year as Head Coach, after spending the last two years as an assistant for the Eastside YMCA swim team. In the last two years, we’ve seen our swimmers accomplish some incredible goals, both in and out of the pool. Last year alone, nearly half of our team achieved post-season district cut times, and almost a quarter went on to compete at our YMCA Pennsylvania State Meet. I’m excited to continue coaching the swimmers of the Eastside Y in setting and achieving individual goals through hard work, skill building, and encouragement. I can’t wait to see what this season holds!

My swimming career began in summer league, and I went on to high school as a member of my local Coffman YMCA swim team. At Dayton Christian High School, I was part of two record-setting relays for the 400 free relay and 200 medley relay. I then swam NCAA DII at Hillsdale College as a distance swimmer, specializing in the 200 Fly, 500 Free, 1000 Free, and 1650 Free for three years, and worked as a coaching assistant my final undergraduate year. During that time, I also lifeguarded and taught swim lessons to students of all ages.

Anthony Squeglia, Assistant Coach

This is my second year coaching for the Eastside Family YMCA Swim team.  I love working with the team that I swam and had so much fun with during my high school career.  With swimming for 15 years competitively, I have been around the water my entire life, and my roots start right here in Erie.  No matter what team I was on, whether it was for St. George School, Lake Erie Summer Swim League, Cathedral Prep, Erie Aquatics, Eastside YMCA Swim Team, or lifeguarding both at the Downtown & Glenwood YMCAs, I was around the water 24/7, 365 days a year!   I then continued my swimming/water polo career as a DIII student-athlete at Washington & Jefferson College, where I swam for an additional 3 years while attaining my degrees in English & History, graduating in 2016.  Now being back in Erie, it feels great to get the chance to join and coach for a team that had such an impact on my life. With the leadership, dedication, teamwork, and goal-seeking initiatives I was able to pick up during my years at the Eastside Y from so many different coaches, I hope to pass the same qualities along!

Dan Saunders, Assistant Coach

I’m new this year to the Eastside Swim Team coaching staff. While I have many years of experience, this is my first year coaching. I began swimming when I was 10 years old, for the North East YMCA program, now known as the Eastside YMCA program. In my second year on the team, I qualified for states in the 200 IM and both 200 medley and free relays, which went on to break the Northwest PA YMCA Swim League records, records that still stand today. The medley relay also went on to qualify for Nationals that year. From there, I went on to qualify for States one more time before leaving the YMCA program to swim at North East High School.  There I swam varsity four years, qualifying twice for States, and was recognized as an Athlete of the Week in 2006. I went on to be a collegiate swimmer at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania for two years, before leaving the team to concentrate on completing my degree in Drafting.

My years on the YMCA and North East teams have some of my best memories in them, because of the team environment and friendships that still carry on today. I am excited to get started with the Eastside Swim Team as a coach, and to get back into the sport that I am so passionate about!

Shannon Pietrasiewicz, Assistant Coach

This will be my second year working with the Eastside YMCA Swim Team. Last year, I was the lifeguard for this team, and this year will be my first year as a coach. I swam competitively for Harborcreek High School, so I feel right at home in our practice pool! I started working at the Eastside Y as a lifeguard in 1997, and started teaching swim lessons the following year. I also lifeguarded and taught swimming at Glenwood YMCA.

I loved teaching swim lessons and seeing the progress that children can make. I look forward to working with the great group of kids we have on our team, and continuing to see them progress and achieve the goals they set.
